Best MCP servers for computer use in 2027

Which MCP server to add when you want Claude, Cursor or Codex to drive a desktop or a browser, and what each one actually runs on.

Updated

Quick answer: if your agent needs a whole computer (desktop, browser, shell and files), the Orgo MCP server is a direct pick in 2027, because it gives any MCP client tools to create cloud computers and click, type, run commands and read the screen on them. If the job never leaves a website, a browser MCP server such as Playwright MCP, Browserbase MCP or Steel MCP is lighter, and Amazon WorkSpaces fits desktop apps that must stay inside an AWS account.

TL;DR

  • Orgo MCP: full cloud computers, Linux on any account and Windows on a paid plan. Hosted at https://www.orgo.ai/mcp with a sign-in or an API key, or local with npx -y orgo-mcp-server and an API key (Orgo MCP guide).
  • Amazon WorkSpaces for AI agents: a Windows or Linux desktop with the apps you configure, behind a managed MCP endpoint with IAM authentication (AWS, supported systems).
  • Playwright MCP: a browser on your own machine, driven through accessibility snapshots instead of screenshots (Playwright MCP).
  • Browserbase MCP: hosted cloud browser sessions driven by natural-language actions through Stagehand (Browserbase docs).
  • Steel MCP: cloud Chrome run by Steel, with a handoff so a person can take over for a login or a CAPTCHA (Steel MCP server).

A computer-use MCP server is a Model Context Protocol server whose tools let a model act on a screen: open apps or pages, click, type, scroll and read back what changed. The model in your client decides which tool to call; the server decides what kind of machine those calls land on.

What should you look for in a computer-use MCP server in 2027?

Four questions sort most options:

  1. What does the agent get? A browser tab, or a whole computer with a desktop, shell, files and installed apps. Tasks that touch a desktop app, a download folder or a terminal need the second.
  2. Where does it run? On your laptop, on the vendor's cloud, or in your own cloud account. Local is free and fast to try; cloud keeps running when your laptop sleeps and keeps bad commands off your own machine.
  3. How does the model see the screen? Screenshots, an accessibility tree, or natural-language actions resolved by another model. Each one changes token use and which models work well.
  4. How do you sign in and scope it? A hosted sign-in, an API key, or cloud IAM, and whether you can limit what the tools reach.

When is Orgo MCP the right pick?

Pick Orgo MCP when the work does not fit inside one browser tab: installing a tool and running it, editing a file the agent downloaded, using a desktop app, or running a test suite on a clean machine.

  • Two ways to connect. Add https://www.orgo.ai/mcp to a client that supports remote MCP servers and sign in, or run npx -y orgo-mcp-server locally with an API key (Orgo MCP guide). In Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http orgo https://www.orgo.ai/mcp.
  • Tools follow the API. The tools are generated from Orgo's published API spec, one tool per operation, so they cover workspaces, computers, screenshots, mouse and keyboard, bash and Python, screens, files and templates.
  • A sign-in is scoped. The hosted sign-in uses OAuth with PKCE and is held to the workspace you choose. It never receives a computer's password and cannot reach templates or other workspaces. To revoke one, open Settings → Security → Connected AI apps and click Disconnect. The app's next tool call gets 401 and has to sign in again.
  • The hosted URL can be read only. Connect to https://www.orgo.ai/mcp?read_only=1, or send the header X-Orgo-Read-Only: 1. Only reviewed read tools are listed, and a call to any other tool is refused, for API keys and sign-ins alike.
  • You can narrow the local server. ORGO_READ_ONLY registers only the read tools, and ORGO_TAGS exposes only the tool groups you list.
  • You can pin one computer. Over the hosted URL, send X-Orgo-Default-Computer-Id or add ?computer_id= to the URL. Locally, set ORGO_DEFAULT_COMPUTER_ID. Action tools can then leave out the computer id.
  • You can hand off a whole task. With an API key, orgo_create_chat_completion gives a task to Orgo's own computer-use agent instead of driving each click from your client. Chat through MCP always uses credits.
  • Screens come back as images. Over a sign-in, orgo_get_screenshot always returns an image the model can see. With an API key, pass response_format: "base64".

Each Orgo computer is its own virtual machine with its own disk, a full desktop, a browser and a terminal, and it runs until you stop it, or until its credit runs out if it runs by the hour (llms.txt). Unless you hand off a task, the model in your client decides what to do. Full setup for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Claude Desktop and VS Code is in Orgo MCP for AI agents.

When does Amazon WorkSpaces make sense?

When the agent has to use desktop applications your company already runs on AWS. AWS describes it as a managed WorkSpaces Applications environment reached through a standard MCP endpoint: you authenticate through IAM, point your agent framework at the endpoint, and the agent works on a Windows desktop with the applications you specify. It routes subtasks to MCP tools when they exist and falls back to vision-driven screen actions when they don't (AWS). Its developer guide also lists Linux images.

The tradeoff is setup inside an AWS account. If you want a computer from a sign-in or an API key without an AWS project, Orgo is the shorter path. For prices and a side-by-side, see Orgo vs Amazon WorkSpaces for AI agents.

When is a browser MCP server enough?

When every step of the task happens on websites. A browser is lighter than a desktop, and the three options here each take a different approach.

Playwright MCP runs a browser on your own machine and gives the model the page's accessibility tree, so it needs no vision model. Its README calls it fast, lightweight and deterministic, and coordinate-based clicks are an opt-in vision capability. It also points coding agents to the Playwright CLI as a more token-efficient option (Playwright MCP).

Browserbase MCP connects to https://mcp.browserbase.com/mcp with your Browserbase API key. Built on Stagehand, it lets the model give plain-English commands such as "click the login button", and its tools create, reuse and close sessions. A Stagehand model interprets those commands; the setup guide lists google/gemini-2.5-flash-lite as the default (setup guide).

Steel MCP gives an MCP client a cloud Chrome run by Steel. It reads pages as an accessibility tree with element references and reports what changed after a click. On clients with MCP Apps, such as Claude, it hands the browser to a person at a login wall or CAPTCHA. Its README says it installs from GitHub and not from npm, and that a hosted endpoint is not live yet (Steel MCP server).

For the browser-versus-computer decision in more depth, see Cloud desktops vs. headless browsers and Orgo vs Browserbase.

Can you use a browser MCP server and Orgo MCP together?

Yes. An MCP client can load several servers at once, and the model picks a tool per step. A common split is a browser server for quick lookups and Orgo for anything that needs files, a shell or a desktop app. Keep tool confirmation on for both, and narrow each server to the tools the task needs so the model is not choosing between near-duplicates.

How much does a computer-use MCP server cost?

Most of these servers are free to add; you pay for what they run on. Playwright MCP runs on your own machine. Browserbase and Steel bill through their own plans, so check their pricing pages for current rates. AWS adds a $0.05 an hour MCP session fee on top of its streaming instances (AWS pricing).

On Orgo, a new account can get $5 of starting credit, which runs one Medium Linux computer by the hour. A Medium is 2 vCPU and 8 GB RAM and costs $0.055 an hour while running. Paid plans start at $29 a month for one always-on Medium. Windows does not run by the hour: it is included on Scale ($399 a month), and on Starter or Growth each Windows computer is $47 a month, a $15 license plus a Medium's memory, vCPU and disk. Prices as of November 2026 (Orgo pricing).

How do you try one on your own task?

  1. Write down one real task, such as "download last month's invoice and rename it by date", and the tools it touches.
  2. If it only touches websites, add a browser MCP server. If it touches files, a shell or a desktop app, add Orgo MCP.
  3. Run the same prompt three times and note where the model got stuck.
  4. Turn on tool confirmation and narrow the tool list before you let it run unattended.

FAQ

What is the best MCP server for computer use?

It depends on what the agent must touch. For a full desktop with a shell, files and apps, Orgo MCP. For desktop apps inside AWS, Amazon WorkSpaces. For website-only tasks, a browser server such as Playwright MCP, Browserbase MCP or Steel MCP.

Is there an MCP server that gives Claude a whole computer?

Yes. Orgo MCP gives Claude Code, Claude Desktop and other MCP clients tools to create a cloud computer and drive its desktop, browser and shell (Orgo MCP guide).

Do I need a vision model for computer-use MCP?

Not for browser servers that read the accessibility tree, like Playwright MCP and Steel MCP. For a full desktop, the model reads screenshots, so pick a model with computer use. See Computer use models compared.

Is it safer to run computer use in the cloud than on my laptop?

A cloud computer keeps a bad command off your own machine, and you can stop or delete it. It does not replace tool confirmation: a click or a shell command can still change things in any account the computer is signed in to.

Can an MCP server run a Windows desktop for an agent?

Yes. Orgo runs Windows computers on paid plans: included on Scale, or $47 a month per computer on Starter and Growth. Without Scale or a license, creating a Windows computer returns 403 WINDOWS_REQUIRES_SCALE. Amazon WorkSpaces for AI agents also gives agents a Windows desktop, inside AWS (comparison).
